To create it I used gesso on nickle with pencil and pen. Copper is used as an accent. Gesso is a traditional drawing and painting primer, but is not as durable as I wanted and this concerned me. After two years of exploration, I developed the technique using industrial auto primers. Stratum is inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement and the wonderful patterns created by William Morris. The Arts and Crafts movement was a response to industrialization, which was powered by coal. This pattern is a minimalist abstraction of the Lepidodendron tree, one of the ancient trees that would eventually provide modern day coal. The challenge was to use at least 50% of a supplied kit and one found object, in this year’s challenge, the object was an image. Mnemosyne stands before a crumbling temple, goddess of memory, she reaches toward the water of Lethe which pour from an urn suspended in a night sky. The water of Lethe bring about forgetfulness, loss of memory. Exploring the coast of the Svalbard archipelago, we sailed to to within 10º of the northern pole. The views and landscape were as inspiring as one can imagine. My challenge was to create artwork while respecting this beautiful, protected area. Prior to the trip, I created a brooch that could be adjusted to temporarily capture various objects. During the trip, we saw the presence of humans everywhere. Plastic and commercial fishing nets were a common sight on our landings. The brooches, made of ABS plastic using 3D printing technology, symbolized that constant human presence we experienced, even in such a remote and hard to reach place. Each object temporarily set in a brooch was documented, then returned to the environment. Shipmates and crew generously modeled artwork, often in sub-freezing conditions.
